Description

Dried fractions from a biomass sampling in the soil warming experiment at Flakaliden in September 2013. Stored fractions are: • spruce needles, separated in age classes • living branch axles • attached dead branches • dead branches • wood and bark from stem disks Tree 1-3 = IC plot 12BK Tree 4-6 = IC plot 8B:2 Tree 7-9 = IH plot 8B:1 Tree 10-12 = IH plot 8B:2 Tree 13-15 = ILC plot 7A:1 Tree 16-18 = ILH plot 7A:1 Tree 19-21 = ILH plot 7A:2 Tree 21-24 = ILC plot 7A:2 Treatments are: IC = irrigation with water, non heated plot IH = irrigation with water, heated plot ILC = irrigation with liquid fertiliser, non heated plot ILH = irrigation with liquid fertiliser, heated plot.

Background information

The soil warming experiment, which started in 1994 and ended in the autumn of 2012, was conducted on two treatments: irrigation with water (I) and irrigation with liquid fertiliser (IL), with two control plots and two heated plots on each treatment, a total of eight plots (size 10x10 m). The ground was heated by heating cables installed between humus and mineral soil. Heated plots were kept 5°C warmer than the control areas during the vegetation period. Soil warming started one month before normal spring thaw. In the autumn, when the control areas froze, the heating was reduced by 1°C per week, which means that the frost-free period was extended around two months per year. In September-October 2013 a destructive sampling was carried out in the soil warming experiment. A total of 24 trees were sampled from I control, I heat, IL control, IL heat. Tree crowns were divided into five stratums. Two sample branches taken from each stratum were regarded as one unit. Stem disks were taken at tree base, one meter, 1.30 meter and then on each meter. Needles were separated in C-needles, C+1-needles and C+2-needles (C+2-needles also includes older needles). Specific leaf area measurements (SLA) were done on the needle ages classes.
