Description

Dried spruce cones and seeds collected in nutrient optimisation experiment 1477 Flakaliden in September 1995. Cones were collected at branch whorl 3, 4, 5 and 6 on eight spruces in four treatments (C, I, F, IL). For each treatment, the cones are merged per branch whorl.

Background information

1995 was a cone-rich year for spruce in northern Sweden, which is why a flower and cone inventory, as well as cone sampling, was conducted in the Flakaliden experimental area. The sampling of cones included four treatments: control (C), irrigation with water (I), solid fertilisation (F) and irrigation with liquid fertiliser (IL). Each treatment included 8 medium height trees, distributed so that each parcel within the respective treatment was represented by at least 1 kappa tree. The criteria for selecting sample trees, in addition to height, were that the distribution of cones within the crown should be similar to trees that were part of an inventory made earlier in September and that the number of cones would be at least equal to the average shown by the inventory. One branch, the one with the most number of cones was sampled from whorl 3, 4, 5 and 6. In total 128 branches were processed and dried.
