Description

Dried branch fractions from the first biomass sampling in the nutrient optimisation experiment E79 Asa. Fractions are: • Spruce needles separated into age classes • Branch axles separated into age classes • Sorted branch fractions, residual (May 1988)

Background information

Sixteen spruce trees were sampled over the entire trial area, with areas belonging to all treatments included. All trees are to be considered as control trees. Tree crowns were divided into three strata A) whorl 1-4, B) whorl 5-8, C) whorl 10-12. Sample branches were taken in all living branch whorls up to whorl twelve. The processing of sample branches was extensive. Sample branches were first divided into main axis (order 1) and other axles (order 2+). Branches were then separated into age classes. Dry weights for both needles and branch axles were registered for all ages classes. For some reason branches from tree 6, 7, 9 and 10 were neither dried and weighed. Stem parts were not saved for storage. The biomass samples were first stored at The Department of Forest Production Ecology, SLU Uppsala. In 2004 the samples were sent to SilvaBoreal-Archive for longtime storage.
