Description

Unground spruce C+1-needles, sample no. 1-40, collected 2008-07-10 in the soil warming experiment at Flakaliden. The samples were taken on the seventh branch whorl and has not been analysed. Remains of ground C+1 spruce needles, sample no. 41-80, collected 2008-10-28 in the soil warming experiment at Flakaliden. The samples are pooled samples consisting of C+1-needles from five trees on each plot. Nutrient analysis was performed at the Department of Soil and Environment, SLU Uppsala. Background information

The soil warming experiment, which started in 1994 and ended in the autumn of 2012, was conducted on two treatments: irrigation with water (I) and irrigation with liquid fertiliser (IL), with two control plots and two heated plots on each treatment, a total of eight plots (size 10x10 m). The ground was heated by heating cables installed between humus and mineral soil. Heated plots were kept 5°C warmer than the control areas during the vegetation period. Soil warming started one month before normal spring thaw. In the autumn, when the control areas froze, the heating was reduced by 1°C per week, which means that the frost-free period was extended around two months per year.

Events Analysis 2009: Samples taken 2008-10-28 were sent to Monika Strömgren, Dept. of Soil and Environment, Uppsala, on 31st March 2009 for analysis. Samples were returned to the Archive in December 2011.
