Description

Dried stem disks from a biomass sampling conducted in September 2000 in the whole-tree chamber experiment at the nutrient optimisation experiment 1477 Flakaliden. There were 12 trees in the whole tree chambers experiment and 6 outside control trees standing on Control plots (C) and Irrigation with liquid fertiliser plots (IL). The samples are marked C1-C12 and IL1-IL12. Stem disks were taken at the stem base, breast height, 40% of total height, in the 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd annual height increments of the stem (the 1996-1999 increments). These disks are marked as: BASE, BH, D40, W5, W4, W3, W2 respectively.

Background information

The whole-tree chamber experiment at Flakaliden started in the early spring of 1998 using 12 temperature-controlled whole-tree chambers, where the CO2 was maintained either at ambient (360 μmol CO2 mol−1) or twice ambient CO2 (720 μmol CO2 mol−1). The chambers were installed on C (control) and IL (irrigation with liquid fertiliser) plots, which were adjacent to each other. The CO2 treatments were: • ambient CO2 (C–A and IL–A) • elevated CO2 (C–E and IL–E) • nonchambered outdoor controls (C–O and IL–O) There were three replicates of each treatment, giving a total of 18 trees. The 18 trees were harvested in September 2000 and biomass samples were taken immediately after the trees were felled. Stem disks and sample branches were processed by Vindeln Experimental Forest. Stem disks were archived at Östvallen.
